Texting orders isn’t prohibited, but it’s often misunderstood. CMS and The Joint Commission allow it when using HIPAA-compliant, secure platforms and when proper EHR documentation is used. The catch: It should be reserved for urgent situations, and not all “secure” apps meet compliance standards.
